Wordplay could be defined as a humorous play on words, or a literary technique. It is widely used in everyday speech and also in almost every kind of writing there is. What wordplay does is it adds some enthusiasm to the story and makes it more enjoyable to read. In some cases wordplay can confuse the reader, however I strongly believe that it is not intended to do such, but rather to make the reader think more deeply about the statement.
One reason an author might use wordplay is to reinforce the meaning of the work.he use of wordplay can cause the reader to “read in between the lines” to find the deeper meaning and realize what the author is really trying to say. For example, John F. Kennedy once made a statement using wordplay. “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.” I am sure that statement made many young American men decide to join the army because what President Kennedy said caused them to think deeply. Wordplay can refresh the old way of talking. It provides a new way to say something in a creative way, such as saying “I’m going to go I’ll see you later” but instead, “Imma be out son, later.” An author of children’s books would use wordplay to entertain the child and stimulate the mind, such as all of the books written by Dr. Seuss, these make the story more fun and active rather then just being a long bold story.
Even if wordplay is a very old thing, it is still kept alive and will be kept alive. It is still used in many writings today; however it is mainly used in the lyrics of today’s modern music. It will continue to refresh everyday speech and keep the world laughing. Alice in Wonderland would not have been the story it was at all if it wasn’t for the excessive use of wordplay throughout the story.
